Netflix’s New Rules on Password Sharing: What You Need to Know

Netflix, the popular streaming giant, has recently made significant changes to its password sharing rules. This move has left many users wondering about the implications on their viewing experience and their wallets. In this blog post, we delve into the details of these changes and what they mean for Netflix users.

The End of Free Password Sharing

Netflix has started informing U.S. users that the era of free password sharing has come to an end. While users can still share their accounts with individuals outside their household, this feature is no longer available for free. According to a sample email shared in Netflix’s blog post, users will now have to pay an additional $7.99 per month for an extra member slot if they wish to share their Netflix account outside their household.

Extra Member Slots and Their Costs

Unfortunately, these extra member slots are only available under Netflix’s Standard or Premium plans. The Standard plan, priced at $15.49 per month, allows for one extra member, while the Premium plan, priced at $19.99 per month, permits two. Users can also save a profile from a previously shared account by transferring it to a new paid membership, thereby preserving its watch list and recommendations.

Restrictions and Benefits of Extra Member Accounts

Extra member accounts come with some restrictions. They can only watch Netflix or download titles on one device at a time and can only have one profile. However, these extra members also have their own passwords, which can be a significant advantage for those concerned about security.

    Netflix’s Response to User Discontent

Netflix is aware that charging for a feature that was previously free may not sit well with many users. In response, the company has stated that it continues to invest heavily in new films and TV shows to keep customers coming back, such as its recent $2.5 billion investment in South Korean entertainment.
